Communications has been the best-performing stock market sector in 2024 and continues to dominate in 2025. The Vanguard Communication Services ETF (NYSEMKT: VOX) offers a low-cost way to invest in this sector, with a minimal expense ratio of 0.09%. This ETF mirrors the performance of the communications sector, which is driven by companies like Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG, NASDAQ: GOOGL). These two companies make up nearly half of the communications sector, showcasing the concentration of power in this industry.

While the Vanguard Communication Services ETF has 117 holdings, it is heavily weighted towards a few key players like Netflix, Walt Disney, Comcast, AT&T, Verizon Communications, and T-Mobile. This concentration on a small number of companies can be seen as both a strength and a risk for investors. Meta Platforms and Alphabet have incredibly high margins due to their capital-light business models, particularly in advertising. This allows them to convert more sales into profit and invest heavily in research and development.

Both Meta Platforms and Alphabet have reasonable valuations and strong growth prospects, making them attractive investment options. The Vanguard Communication Services ETF provides exposure to these companies while offering some diversification beyond them. This ETF has a 1% yield and a 23 P/E ratio, making it a more affordable option compared to other growth-focused ETFs.

Investing in the communications sector is a bet on the continued success of companies like Meta Platforms and Alphabet. As long as these stocks continue to perform well, the Vanguard Communication Services ETF has the potential to outperform the S&P 500. However, investors looking for a broader range of mega-cap growth stocks may want to consider other options like the Vanguard Growth ETF or the Vanguard Mega Cap Growth ETF.

Overall, the communications sector remains a top performer, driven by the success of key players like Meta Platforms and Alphabet. Investing in this sector through the Vanguard Communication Services ETF can be a strategic move for those looking to capitalize on the growth potential of these industry giants.
