Meghan McCain recently revealed that she chose to write in her late father, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), for president in the 2024 election instead of supporting Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump. This decision stemmed from her Christian beliefs and her inability to vote for Trump due to personal reasons.
During an interview on Katie Couric’s “Next Question” podcast, McCain explained her unconventional choice and expressed her disappointment in Harris’s policies, particularly regarding abortion and other issues. She also criticized Governor Tim Walz for being too extreme for her conservative views.
The McCain family has a history of speaking out against Trump, especially after his controversial remarks about John McCain’s military service. Trump and John McCain had several public disagreements, leading to Trump not being invited to McCain’s funeral after his passing.
Meghan McCain’s decision not to support either Trump or Harris aligns with her previous statements, where she expressed her loyalty to the Republican Party but opted not to vote for either candidate. She emphasized her respect for her family members’ diverse political opinions and her hopes for a brighter future.
In the interview, McCain also acknowledged Harris’s efforts during the presidential race, praising her for stepping up when President Joe Biden dropped out and facing numerous challenges. Despite having some criticisms of Harris, McCain defended her against what she perceived as unfair portrayals in the media.
