It’s that time of year once again.

The Rusty Mac Memorial Pairs Tournament kicks off today at the Awamoa Bowling Club.

This annual event pays tribute to the late Russell “Rusty” McDonald and his son, Craig, who passed away in 2019 and 2022, respectively.

Craig initiated the tournament alongside his mother, Annie McDonald, in 2020.

Now in its sixth year, the tournament has become a traditional kickoff to the bowls season in North Otago, according to Annie McDonald.

“It’s amazing to see it continue to thrive and remain so popular.”

Bowlers are traveling from as far as Tauranga in the north and Riverton in the south to compete.

This year, there are some top-notch pairs gracing the greens, Annie McDonald noted.

Defending champions from last year, Bernie Blackmun and Paul Avis from Christchurch, are back to defend their title, along with the 2024 Craig McDonald Plate winners Shane Elliott from Timaru and Dion Murphy from Oamaru.

New Zealand under-26 representative Hamish Kelliher is also participating once again.

“It’s another star-studded field this year. A must-see event,” Annie McDonald added.

Awamoa Bowling Club president Bob Kingan mentioned that most of the bowlers return every year to compete.

“They’re always eager to secure their spots.”

The club’s greens are always well-received by the competitors.

“Last year, some bowlers from Christchurch wanted to take our greens back with them, but we insisted they stay here,” Kingan shared.

“The Southlanders are amazed that we’re playing at this time of year,” club secretary Terry Lake added.

Kingan expressed his gratitude for the hard work put in behind the scenes.

“The McDonald family has dedicated a lot of effort to make this event happen, and we truly appreciate it.”

The tournament commences today and will conclude on Sunday.
