L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón is on the verge of making a monumental decision that could change the fate of Erik and Lyle Menendez. The brothers, who have been incarcerated for nearly 35 years for the shotgun murders of their parents, may soon see a glimmer of hope for freedom.
Gascón is expected to announce whether he will recommend that the brothers be released from prison. The decision could go one of two ways – either the judge will resentence them to time served or set aside the murder conviction and impose a voluntary manslaughter conviction, which carries a maximum sentence of 11 years.
The case took a new turn after Gascón reevaluated the evidence following the presentation of a letter written by Erik to his cousin Andy Cano, detailing ongoing abuse by his father José. Additionally, former Menudo member Roy Rosselló came forward with allegations of sexual abuse against José, aligning with the claims made by Erik and Lyle during their initial trial.
Despite the support from over 20 family members advocating for their release, not everyone is in agreement. A reporter who covered the first trial believes the brothers should remain in prison for life. However, prominent figures such as Rosie O’Donnell, Kim Kardashian, and actor Cooper Koch, who portrayed Erik in the Netflix series ‘Monsters,’ have voiced their support for the Menendez brothers’ release.
As the public awaits Gascón’s decision, the Menendez brothers’ next court date is scheduled for November 26, just days before Thanksgiving. The outcome of this hearing could potentially set the stage for their long-awaited freedom.
