Meryl Streep and Martin Short were recently seen dining together in London.
A fan captured a photo of the Only Murders in the Building stars on Sunday, May 17, shared via X. In the image, both 76-year-old actors were seated side-by-side in a restaurant, engrossed in a phone screen, with Streep resting her shoulder on Short’s chest.
The fan’s caption humorously mentioned, “Spending a few days in London, choosing a restaurant at random and ending up eating just a few meters from Meryl Streep and her husband,” mistakenly identifying Short as Streep’s spouse. Streep is single after parting ways with Don Gummer in 2023, and Short has been single since his wife Nancy Dolman passed away in 2010.
Us Weekly is awaiting comments from the representatives of Streep and Short.
This sighting aligns with reports of the Netflix series filming its sixth season in London, marking its first location outside the U.S. Recently, Steve Martin, their costar, shared several Instagram pictures of his explorations around London, including visiting Trafalgar Square and a shop selling London-themed beanies.
Speculation about Streep and Short dating began in January 2024 after they attended the Golden Globes together. However, a spokesperson clarified that their relationship was strictly platonic, stating, “They are just very good friends, nothing more,” as reported by People.
Despite this, rumors persisted, especially after Short expressed admiration for Streep in various interviews. Amy Schumer even suggested Short might be “off the market” after seeing him with Streep at Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary. Schumer, 44, told People in February 2025, “I think that the tea is, I think Marty might be off the market. That’s what I’m seeing.”
The two have displayed affectionate behavior while promoting OMITB, such as holding hands.
During a June 2025 appearance on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast, Short admitted to feeling nervous about working with Streep on OMITB. He recalled, “I remember the first day working with Meryl and driving to the studio and thinking, ‘I’m nervous today,’” noting it was a rare feeling for him. Streep joined the show as Loretta Durkin in season 3.
Short elaborated on their first scene together in Only Murders, which involved a playful piano moment. He described the scene setup and how Streep helped him manage his nerves. “We go into [the] holding area and she just says, ‘OK, nerves to half.’ I go, ‘Wait a second, I was nervous. You can’t be nervous.’”
Five months later, Streep and Short attended the opening night of Tom Hanks’ play This World of Tomorrow, posing backstage with Martin, 80, his wife Anne Stringfield, Hanks, 69, and his wife Rita Wilson, along with Chet Hanks.
Recently, Streep and Short have been seen frequently dining at Los Angeles’ Giorgio Baldi restaurant, leaving together on several occasions.
