Frigid air creates mesmerizing ‘cloud streets’ around Florida

By Andrea Thompson, edited by Jeanna Bryner

As Arctic air plunged into sunny Florida this past weekend, it made for a mesmerizing sight in a satellite video: parallel lines of clouds colloquially called “cloud streets” streamed from the land over the ocean.

Cloud streets—or horizontal convective rolls, as scientists call them—form when cold, dry air flows above warm surface water—in this case, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic waters near Florida.

That cold air gets warmed up as it moves over the ocean’s warmer surface and then rises. That rising air cools, and water vapor condenses. Eventually, the air hits a layer of warmer air above that acts like a lid and causes the rising air to roll over—forming parallel cylinders of rotating air, according to a 2019 description of the phenomenon from NASA. That air, now cooler and wrung of its moisture, then flows back down to the surface on the sides of the rolled clouds. There, the air remains clear, creating the long, parallel lines seen in the new video.

It takes time for the onrush of cold air to pick up moisture from the water below, hence the gap between the shoreline and when the rolls begin. And the cloud streets generally align with the direction of the wind.

The mesmerizing video captured the beauty and complexity of nature’s phenomena, showcasing the intricate dance between air temperature, moisture, and wind patterns.

There has never been a more important time for us to stand up and show why science matters. I hope you’ll support us in that mission. The Effects of Climate Change on Marine Life

Climate change is having a profound impact on the world’s oceans and its marine life. The rising temperatures, changing ocean chemistry, and disruptions in weather patterns are all contributing to significant changes in the marine environment. These changes are affecting marine species in various ways, from altering their habitats to threatening their survival.

One of the most immediate impacts of climate change on marine life is the warming of ocean temperatures. As the Earth’s atmosphere heats up, so too does the ocean. This warming can lead to the bleaching of coral reefs, which are home to a quarter of all marine species. Coral bleaching occurs when the symbiotic relationship between coral and the algae that live within its tissues breaks down due to stress from high temperatures. This can lead to the death of coral reefs, which in turn affects the entire ecosystem that relies on them for food and shelter.

In addition to rising temperatures, climate change is also causing ocean acidification. The increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are being absorbed by the ocean, leading to a decrease in pH levels. This can have a detrimental effect on marine life, particularly on shell-forming organisms like oysters, clams, and corals. The acidic conditions can make it harder for these organisms to build their shells, leading to weakened shells that are more susceptible to predators and environmental stressors.

Climate change is also disrupting weather patterns, leading to more frequent and intense storms. These storms can cause physical damage to coral reefs and other marine habitats, as well as disrupt the feeding and breeding patterns of marine species. In addition, the increased frequency of extreme weather events can lead to habitat loss and fragmentation, making it harder for marine species to find suitable habitats for survival.

Overall, the effects of climate change on marine life are far-reaching and complex. From warming temperatures to ocean acidification to extreme weather events, the marine environment is facing unprecedented challenges. It is crucial that we take action to mitigate the impacts of climate change on marine life, from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to protecting and restoring marine habitats. Only by working together can we ensure a healthy and vibrant ocean for future generations.
