NASA’s Psyche spacecraft is journeying to a metal-rich asteroid located beyond Mars, enjoying a scenic detour along the way.
Earlier this year, the spacecraft executed a flyby maneuver, utilizing the gravity of a planet to alter its course. During this process, it captured imagery that NASA has compiled into an enchanting time-lapse video.
This time-lapse video depicts NASA’s Psyche spacecraft as it approaches and departs Mars, leveraging the planet’s gravitational pull to propel itself toward the asteroid Psyche.

The visual sequence begins with a faint crescent of Mars enlarging as the spacecraft navigates over the planet’s sweeping ocher landscapes. The surface is dotted with impact craters, and the polar ice caps gleam under the sunlight. The series reaches its climax with a close pass over the planet before the Psyche spacecraft transitions into interplanetary space.
Launched in 2023, the Psyche mission aims to study an asteroid that scientists believe could be the exposed nickel-iron core of an early planet, stripped bare by violent collisions in the solar system’s early days.
Taking advantage of Mars’s gravity to propel the spacecraft further, mission scientists conducted a comprehensive test of its multispectral imager.
“The imager performed brilliantly,” said Jim Bell, the Psyche imager instrument lead at Arizona State University, in a statement.
“We were also able to fully test its calibration and sensitivity to scattered light, including identifying the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos from a great distance as part of practice for satellite searching at the asteroid Psyche, where we hope to discover any moonlets.”
Having traveled for three years, the Psyche spacecraft has three more years to go before reaching its target. If all proceeds as planned, it will arrive at the asteroid in 2029.
