Meta Continues to Poach Talent from OpenAI

It seems like Meta is not slowing down when it comes to hiring top talent from OpenAI. Recently, JS reported that Meta brought on board Trapit Bansal, a well-known researcher from OpenAI. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company also recruited three other researchers from OpenAI.

The Information has now revealed that Meta has hired four more researchers from OpenAI: Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren. This hiring spree comes on the heels of Meta’s launch of the Llama 4 AI models in April, which reportedly did not meet CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s expectations. The company faced criticism for the version of Llama used in a popular benchmark.

There has been some tension between Meta and OpenAI, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinting at lucrative offers from Meta, including “$100 million signing bonuses.” However, Altman mentioned that none of OpenAI’s top talents had left so far. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth clarified to employees that while senior leaders may have received substantial offers, the actual terms were more complex than a simple signing bonus.
