AR is showcasing a diverse collection of microdramas from both China and other regions at the current Mipcom market.
Focusing on the Chinese short-form content sector, valued at $7 billion, alongside a $4 billion international market, the company boasts a library featuring 1,000 titles from eight studios and five apps. Notably, its top 100 programs have accumulated over 10 billion views worldwide.
During Mipcom, AR is highlighting new and trending series from Liu Yi Media, Playlet, and COL, three of the leading studios in this space.
Liu Yi Media, established in 2022 by author Mo Jian Shao Ye, creates more than 20 original short dramas each month and has an extensive library exceeding 500 titles. The studio enjoys a hit rate of about 50%. Featured at Mipcom are titles such as âUrban Miracle Doctor,â which tells the story of Qin Yang, a disgraced construction worker whose medical abilities and determination elevate him from obscurity to prominence, and âDragon Mother,â where street cleaner Tang Zhenzhen uncovers her mysterious heritage as a warrior queen while fighting against injustice. These narratives highlight Liu Yi Mediaâs commitment to audience-centric storytelling through its proprietary platform, Liu Yi Short Drama.
Playlet focuses on vertical-screen microdramas across various genres. The studio has seen a remarkable 400% revenue growth in the APAC region during early 2024 and is known for its outstanding performance in the industry. Among the highlights at Mipcom are âThe Mayorâs XXL Wife: Her Stunning Return,â detailing Sophia’s journey to reclaim her life and love after a dramatic transformation, and âThe Secret Heiress,â which follows Lily Wilson as she returns from abroad, hiding her wealth and identity to confront those who wronged her. Playlet’s collaboration with established talent plays a crucial role in its strategy for global expansion.
COL, a publicly traded company, specializes in the development, production, and distribution of microdramas across North America, China, and Southeast Asia. The studio has launched platforms such as Reelshort, Sereal+, and Flareflow, and is active in content licensing, IP development, co-producing, and consulting. From its Sereal+ label, COL is introducing âMy L.A. Fireman,â a romantic tale set amidst a California wildfire, and âMy Call Boy Billionaire Daddy,â which chronicles Ines’s return to confront her past and reclaim her future after being wronged by the powerful Ward family. These initiatives reflect COLâs objective to integrate premium storytelling with scalable international formats.
The collective involvement of these companies at Mipcom underscores the rapid advancement of the microdrama industry, as Chinese studios and platforms work to position short-form series for global audiences.
