Microsoft to Close Operations in Pakistan After 25 Years
Microsoft has announced that it will be closing its operations in Pakistan, marking the end of a 25-year presence in the South Asian nation. The Redmond-based company stated that it is changing its operational model in Pakistan and will now serve its customers through resellers and other closely located Microsoft offices.
The decision will impact five Microsoft employees in Pakistan, according to sources familiar with the matter. The closure comes as part of a broader company restructuring effort, with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in Pakistan describing it as part of a wider workforce optimization program. Earlier in the week, Microsoft reduced its global workforce by 4%, or about 9,000 roles.
Former Microsoft executive Jawwad Rehman, who was the company’s first lead in Pakistan, expressed disappointment over the exit in a post on LinkedIn. He highlighted the challenges in the environment that led to Microsoft’s decision to leave and the need for a stronger foundation to retain global companies in the country.
The exit comes shortly after Pakistan’s federal government announced plans to provide IT certifications from tech giants like Google and Microsoft to half a million youth. This move contrasts with Google’s investment in the country’s public education sector and its consideration of Pakistan as a market for producing Chromebooks.
Unlike India and other regional markets, Pakistan has not become a major engineering outsourcing destination for Western tech giants. The country’s tech sector is mainly dominated by local companies with their own engineering capabilities and Chinese firms like Huawei, which provide infrastructure solutions to telecommunications companies and banks.
Microsoft’s decision to close its operations in Pakistan reflects the challenges faced by the country’s tech sector in attracting and retaining global tech companies. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has stated that it will continue to engage with Microsoft’s regional and global leadership to ensure a strong long-term commitment to Pakistani customers, developers, and channel partners.
