The Meridian Mall in Dunedin has been magically transformed by the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival team with an enchanting display of twinkling lanterns. This annual glow-up, supported by Meridian Mall, offers the public a preview of the upcoming carnival happening on June 27-28 at First Church from 4pm-9pm.

Shoppers at Meridian Mall will be delighted to discover a luminous world inspired by last year’s carnival theme “Creatures of the Deep”. The displays include radiant pond life, star drops, a giant kraken, and seals, all glowing until July.

Under the artistic direction of Filipa Crofskey, the lantern artists are crafting new giant lanterns for this year’s theme “Wings of Wonder”. The public can also participate in lantern-making workshops at the Meridian starting this weekend.

Stacey Johnston, the marketing manager at Meridian Mall, expressed her joy in providing a space for the lantern-making workshops, keeping the community tradition alive. Attendees can create bumblebees, owls, gulls, and rockets at the workshops.

In collaboration with TÅ«hura Otago Museum, the carnival will host adult lantern-making workshops as part of their “Wine and Design” series. Participants will receive free entry to the carnival and can join the smaller processions around First Church.

Workshop timings: Family workshops at Meridian Mall on May 25-26, June 1-2, June 8-9, and June 15-16. Adult workshops at Tūhura Otago Museum on the same dates.

Volunteers Required: The Dunedin Midwinter Carnival is seeking volunteers for various roles during the event at First Church. No experience is necessary, and volunteers must be 15 years or older.
