The story of a Venezuelan migrant sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempting to murder another migrant who had killed his friend unfolds in a Washington Park apartment building on the South Side. The incidents took place in the same building where reports of armed migrants taking over went viral earlier.

Henry Brito-Dominguez, 25, admitted to attempting to murder Carlos Reinaldo Maribal-Carvajal in exchange for a 10-year prison sentence from Judge Carol Howard. The chain of events began on November 11, 2024, when Maribal-Carvajal allegedly robbed and murdered Peter Sangronis-Medina inside the building on South Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Maribal-Carvajal reportedly took a firearm from Sangronis-Medina during the robbery and used it to kill him in his apartment. He then went on to drag Sangronis-Medina’s body outside and throw it over the second-floor balcony into a dumpster in an attempt to conceal the murder.

Following Sangronis-Medina’s murder, Maribal-Carvajal was shot multiple times from behind on November 19 in the same apartment building. Brito-Dominguez was charged with the shooting, admitting during a police interview that he shot Maribal-Carvajal in retaliation for killing Sangronis-Medina.

The apartment building where these events unfolded had previously been the center of controversy when 911 callers reported armed Venezuelans trespassing and displaying guns in the courtyard. However, responding officers found no issues upon arrival, leading to viral reports on social media that were later debunked by mainstream media outlets.

Maribal-Carvajal remains in custody as he faces murder charges in connection with Sangronis-Medina’s death. The tragic events highlight the complex nature of migrant communities and the challenges they face in a new country.
