Tragedy struck in the Mediterranean Sea as 18 migrants lost their lives when their inflatable boat capsized near the island of Crete, according to Greek authorities on Saturday.
The boat, partially submerged, was discovered by a passing Turkish merchant vessel, with two survivors rescued and a search operation ongoing to find more.
Greece serves as a crucial entry point to the European Union for individuals escaping conflict and poverty in regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Unfortunately, fatal accidents like this are all too common. The treacherous journey from Turkey to Greek islands, often undertaken in inflatable dinghies or small boats in unfavorable conditions, used to be the primary route until increased patrols and alleged pushbacks decreased crossing attempts. However, arrivals from Libya to Crete have been on the rise in recent months.
The origin of the sunken boat has yet to be determined by authorities.
European border agency Frontex, the Greek Coast Guard, and multiple merchant vessels have mobilized a search operation, utilizing a ship, plane, and helicopter in an effort to locate any remaining survivors.
