In his first year as coach, Mike Vrabel achieved one of the most remarkable turnarounds in NFL history by leading the New England Patriots from a 4-13 record to a Super Bowl appearance. His efforts earned him the Coach of the Year award, though this achievement might now be overshadowed by recent developments.

Images released by the New York Post twelve days ago show Vrabel interacting closely with Dianna Russini, a reporter for The Athletic, just a day before the league’s annual meetings last month. Following this, Russini resigned from her position, yet her previous employer continues to investigate her actions.

The investigation could include examining her voting records for the Associated Press’ individual awards and All-Pro teams. When NBC’s Pro Football Talk sought a comment from the AP, they declined to respond.

The AP remains silent on whether it will review Dianna Russini’s NFL awards ballots following recent developments.

Notably, in 2024, the AP did not initially announce that its ballots would be disclosed, but they were published following the announcement of the award winners. Russini expressed her dissatisfaction about this issue during an episode of “Pardon My Take”:

“I was out to dinner, and my phone was blowing up with people in football very angry that I voted for people that I voted for. That stunk. I wish I knew that because — it would not have changed my vote — but I love Josh Allen, and I am avoiding him for a really long time.”

Ian Eagle reacts to Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal

A fresh perspective has emerged regarding the interaction between Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini. During a recent episode of “Outspoken with Dan Sileo,” sportscaster Ian Eagle commented that the scandal has “taken on a life of its own” due to the “mystery” surrounding media interactions with sports figures:

“Dianna’s very respected within the industry, but she’s a very well-known entity. And then to have Mike Vrabel, who has been incredibly successful as a head coach, and then the curiosity that comes to play within the insider game, I think that’s also piqued the interest of people because it’s not something that we really know exactly how it works.”

The Patriots’ de facto GM Eliot Wolf did not address the situation during his pre-draft press conference last Monday.
