New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill’s office has voiced that the state should receive a share of the proceeds from the sale of MetLife Stadium grass by FIFA to soccer enthusiasts.
FIFA, the Zurich-based nonprofit that governs global soccer, is planning to sell pieces of sod from the upcoming World Cup final for $450 each. However, similar to many World Cup hosting expenses, the pitch’s cost was largely covered by local hosts.
“New Jersey covered the bulk of the costs associated with the pitch at MetLife Stadium, and therefore, New Jersey taxpayers deserve a share of the proceeds from this latest revenue attempt,” stated Sherrill’s spokesperson, Sean Higgins, to New Jersey Playbook.
This matter represents only the latest chapter in the ongoing dispute between FIFA and Sherrill. FIFA has not yet responded to a request for comment.
