The MM6 Show at Milan’s Centrale Station
The MM6 show took place in a unique setting at Milan’s Centrale Station, catching the attention of commuters passing by. The fashion crowd, sporting Tabis and eye shields, stood out amidst the everyday hustle and bustle of the train station. This location was a perfect fit for the street-inspired aesthetic of brand Margiela, as the design studio delved into exploring archetypes and everyday clothing.
In true Martin Margiela fashion, the collection played with the idea of making the ordinary extraordinary. Coat hems were turned up and fastened to protect them from everyday hazards like bike splashes. Pencil skirts were reimagined as backless aprons worn over long T-shirts for a twist on modesty, while shirt seams hinted at the remnants of yokes from the past. Denim, a staple in daily wardrobes, was reinterpreted with double waistbands for men and high-waisted, pegged styles for women.
The influence of the 1980s was evident in the collection, with full skirts featuring ruffled hems paired with flannel button-downs and mohair turtlenecks. Oversized sweaters emblazoned with the brand’s numeric logo were styled with thick tights for a modern touch. The color-blocked track jackets and anoraks offered a unisex appeal, while corporate-friendly looks included v-necks over flared shirts and slim skirts or leather jeans.
One misstep in the collection was the inclusion of extra high pumps, a departure from the current trend of prioritizing comfort and practicality in footwear. However, the overall vibe of the collection was one of effortless cool, with models likely to shed their heels and blend seamlessly into the night after the show.
