Monarch Tractor Faces Uncertain Future, Potential Layoffs

The autonomous electric tractor startup Monarch Tractor delivered a grim message to its employees, warning of possible layoffs for over 100 staff members or even the possibility of shutting down, according to a company-wide memo obtained by JS.

The memo follows recent job cuts at Monarch Tractor’s California corporate offices and remote teams in India and Singapore, as reported by former employees who chose to remain anonymous.

Founded in 2018 by a team that includes a former executive from Tesla’s gigafactory and Carlo Mondavi of the well-known winemaking family, Monarch Tractor raised over $220 million, with a significant portion coming in 2024. The company aimed to develop autonomous tractors for various tasks in industries like wineries and fruit farms.

Despite shipping around 500 tractors to date, Monarch Tractor announced a restructuring in late 2024 to expand its product offerings to include tasks like feed pushing in dairy farming and maintenance of golf courses. CEO Praveen Penmesta also indicated a shift towards selling software services and licensing the company’s autonomous technology.

However, a lawsuit filed by one of Monarch Tractor’s early dealers, Burks Tractor, alleged that the autonomous technology in the tractors did not function properly, if at all. The lawsuit claimed that the vehicles were defective and unable to operate autonomously, a claim that Monarch denied in court.

In the recent memo to employees, Monarch Tractor hinted at a potential pivot away from manufacturing tractors, especially after losing its contract manufacturer, Foxconn, earlier in the year. The company’s new business plan focuses on offering software as a service (SaaS) autonomy and other software solutions directly to consumers.

The memo also mentioned the possibility of laying off up to 102 employees, raising concerns about the company’s future. Monarch Tractor had previously cut over 10% of its workforce in late 2024 during the restructuring, but the exact number of recent layoffs remains unknown.

Notably, Monarch Tractor has seen the departure of key personnel, including co-founder Mark Schwager from Tesla. Despite the challenges, Schwager expressed confidence in the company’s direction in a LinkedIn post, signaling a transition to new leadership.
