The battle for the 19th Congressional District seat in New York has become the most expensive race in the state and the seventh costliest in the country, with over $26 million spent so far. Republican Rep. Marc Molinaro is facing off against Democrat Josh Riley in a rematch from 2022.
Molinaro, who narrowly defeated Riley in the previous election, expressed his frustration with the exorbitant amount of money being poured into the race during a recent event, calling it “obscene.”
Both candidates and outside spending groups have collectively spent around $26 million, with Molinaro’s campaign and supporters spending $12 million and Riley’s camp spending $14 million.
Recent polls indicate that the race is a toss-up, with the district being decided by a slim margin of around 4,500 votes in the previous cycle.
The intensity of the rematch has led to a shift in campaign strategies, with Molinaro aligning more closely with the Republican base. Voters have noted this change, with some expressing approval of Molinaro’s more assertive approach.
Molinaro, who previously did not vote for Trump in 2016, now openly supports the former president, emphasizing border security and American safety.
Despite their differences, Molinaro and Riley are not expected to maintain a friendly relationship after the conclusion of this year’s race.
Both campaigns declined to provide further comments on the ongoing race.
