Morehouse College, a renowned institution in Atlanta, has announced F. DuBois Bowman as its next president. Dr. Bowman, currently the dean of the University of Michigan’s public health school, is set to take on this new role on July 15. This appointment comes at a critical time for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) as they navigate the challenges posed by the Trump administration’s policies on higher education.

With President Trump’s efforts to disrupt academic life and diminish diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives on campuses nationwide, HBCUs like Morehouse are facing uncertainties. The administration’s proposal to cut funding for Howard University, the only federally chartered HBCU, has raised concerns among leaders in the HBCU community.

In an interview, Dr. Bowman expressed the challenges that lie ahead for the higher education sector, emphasizing the need for colleges to focus on their core mission and values amidst the current climate of uncertainty. He highlighted the importance of providing a robust academic experience for students while navigating the complexities of the political landscape.

Morehouse College, known for its legacy of producing influential Black leaders such as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is regarded as a center for activism and social change. Dr. Bowman emphasized the college’s commitment to education and creating a space for students from diverse backgrounds to engage in critical thinking and dialogue.

Having graduated from Morehouse in 1992, Dr. Bowman brings a deep connection to the institution and a wealth of experience in academia. His background as a biostatistician and his previous roles in academia position him well to lead Morehouse through these uncertain times.

As he prepares to succeed outgoing President David A. Thomas, Dr. Bowman remains steadfast in his commitment to the college’s mission. Despite the challenges that come with the presidency, he views this role as a calling and an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in higher education.

Dr. Bowman’s appointment signals a new chapter for Morehouse College, one that underscores the importance of leadership and resilience in the face of adversity. As he takes on this role, Dr. Bowman is poised to uphold Morehouse’s legacy while steering the institution towards continued excellence and innovation.
