Murder charges have been filed against a Lakeview man, Charles Leto, in connection with a double shooting near the Douglass Park swimming pool. The charges were announced shortly after surveillance video of the shooting was published by CWBChicago. Leto, 55, is facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, and aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle. He is believed to have been either a lifeguard or a supervisor at the pool.
The incident took place on Thursday evening at the park located at 1401 South Sacramento. Chicago police and fire department personnel responded to reports of shots fired near the basketball courts and pool. Tragically, 15-year-old Marjay Dotson lost his life due to a gunshot wound to his back, as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Another victim, identified as 14-year-old Jeremy Herred by family members, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to his neck.
Leto is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Sunday afternoon. Following his court appearance, CWBChicago will provide a detailed update on the case.
The surveillance video capturing the shooting has been released, showing the moment the gunman began firing. The full clip, which is disturbing to watch, can be viewed here.
CWBChicago was established in 2013 by residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who were dissatisfied with the accuracy of information provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. While initially focused on these areas, the coverage has expanded to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side neighborhoods. The primary goal of CWBChicago remains to deliver original public safety reporting with in-depth context and detail beyond what mainstream media outlets provide.
