Embracing Mottos Over ResolutionsSetting Intentions for the Year Ahead

As the new year approaches, many of us start thinking about resolutions we want to make. However, for me, New Year’s resolutions have never seemed to stick. I’ve tried quitting habits, starting new routines, and setting goals, but the pressure of a January 1st deadline often leads to me abandoning them shortly after. That’s why I’ve turned to a different approach: mottos.

My friend Eliza introduced me to the concept of mottos, which are simple phrases that guide your overall mindset for the year. Instead of focusing on specific tasks or changes, I choose a word or two that encapsulates how I want to live my life in the coming months. In the past, my mottos have been “improve gently” and “enjoy it.” But for 2026, I’ve decided on something more definitive: “Don’t bail.”

It’s not easy for me to admit, but I have a tendency to bail on plans. While I prioritize important commitments, I often find myself backing out of social gatherings or casual meetups at the last minute. I’ve rationalized this behavior with jokes about the instant relief of canceling plans, but deep down, I know it’s a habit I need to break.

My tendency to bail isn’t rooted in a lack of desire to see my friends. In fact, I cherish the time I spend with loved ones, especially since I live alone. They bring me joy, support, and a sense of normalcy that I couldn’t live without. However, my struggles with ADHD-induced overwhelm can make it difficult for me to follow through on social plans when I’m feeling drained or overburdened.

Setting Intentions for the Year Ahead

For 2026, I’m committed to honoring my motto of “Don’t bail.” This means showing up for the people I care about, even when it’s easier to retreat into solitude. It means prioritizing connection over comfort and making a conscious effort to follow through on my commitments, big or small.

While New Year’s resolutions have their time and place, I’ve found that mottos offer a more sustainable way to enact change in my life. By focusing on a guiding principle rather than a specific goal, I can cultivate a mindset that aligns with my values and aspirations for the year ahead.

So as I embark on this new year, I’m embracing the mantra of “Don’t bail” with open arms. It’s a reminder to show up, be present, and invest in the relationships that bring meaning to my life. And who knows, maybe this simple motto will be the key to a fulfilling and connected year ahead.
