My would-be assassins’ sentencing is a verdict for liberty and a warning to dictators

A landmark moment in a lower Manhattan courtroom last week not only delivered a verdict, but also sent a powerful message. The two Russian men who were sent by the Iranian regime to assassinate me have been sentenced to prison, bringing a sense of joy and freedom to me and my family. The journey from constantly moving between safe houses to facing my would-be killers in court has been challenging, but the day of justice being served was truly unforgettable.

Growing up in rural Iran, I was taught to chant “Death to America” without truly understanding the implications. However, as I grew older, I learned about bravery and strength from fellow Iranians who resisted the oppressive regime. I realized that the compulsory hijab was a tool used to silence women and restrict their freedoms. This realization fueled my activism and led me to stand up against the regime, ultimately making me a target for assassination.

Inviting Zohran Mamdani to witness the sentencing of my assailants was important to me. I wanted him to see firsthand how speaking out against oppressive regimes can lead to life-threatening situations, even in the safety of New York City. The veil, a symbol of repression in Iran, serves as a reminder that dictators know no borders and will go to great lengths to silence dissent.

Sitting in that courtroom, I understood that the verdict was not just for me, but for every individual who dares to challenge authoritarian regimes. The wind in my hair and love in my heart as I left the courtroom symbolized the support and solidarity of those who have stood by me throughout this journey.

As the president and co-founder of the World Liberty Congress, I am proud to lead a global alliance of pro-democracy activists from over 60 countries. Our commitment to nonviolent resistance and advocacy for freedom unites us in the face of repressive governments. The upcoming General Assembly in Berlin, during the city’s first annual Freedom Week, is a testament to our collective fight for freedom and democracy.

Berlin, a city with a tumultuous past, stands as a beacon of hope for freedom fighters around the world. Despite the challenges posed by dictators and oppressive regimes, we continue to advocate for political prisoners, hold politicians accountable, and combat transnational repression.

While my would-be assassins may be behind bars, I am acutely aware that the fight for freedom is far from over. The work of the World Liberty Congress is more important than ever as we strive to dismantle the walls of oppression and stand up against dictators who seek to silence us. Onward to Berlin, where we will continue our fight for freedom and justice.
