In difficult economic times, fashion designers often lean towards commercial appeal over artistic expression. However, Naeem Khan decided to challenge this trend for the fall season. “I wanted to make something very artistic,” Khan stated.
Before embarking on his new collection, Khan watched a documentary on Bob Mackie and admired the legendary designer’s enduring influence. “I loved how over-the-top and glamorous [his pieces were,]” Khan noted, which inspired him to pursue a similar level of extravagance. Known for his glamorous gowns, Khan’s embrace of opulence felt fitting.
Focusing on his trademark beading and embellishments, Khan embraced bold peacocking for the fall. His initial piece was a gown adorned with feathers in white, brown, and black. Another noteworthy creation was a mini dress inspired by Andy Warhol’s poppies, featuring beaded flowers on a simple dress, layered with fringes in white, gold, and champagne.
Influenced by Bob Mackie’s work, Khan included a couple of daring “naked” dresses. One design was a transparent mesh gown with crystals on the bodice and a soft, nude skirt. This season, Khan embraced a bold approach, as seen in his sleek black blazer embellished with intricate chandelier-style embroidery. “It’s unisex—I want it to be shared,” Khan said regarding the jacket.
The collection’s finale featured a long black gown and an evening coat, both adorned with rooster feathers that had an oil slick appearance. The dramatic look evoked a Maleficent-like vibe, suitable for a Disney villain. “This [season] was for me to play,” Khan remarked.
