The Rise of Doni Nahmias: A Surf and Skate-Inspired Collection

Doni Nahmias, the independent designer behind the eponymous menswear brand, recently unveiled his latest collection titled “Wipeout” at a show held at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The collection draws inspiration from surf and skate culture, capturing the essence of crashing hard and the thrill of almost conquering something. Nahmias, a surfer and skateboarder himself, explained that he wanted to infuse the energy of wiping out into his designs.

Despite the metaphorical nod to wipeouts, Nahmias is riding high in the fashion world. He gained recognition for his collaboration with actor Timothée Chalamet and stylist Taylor McNeill on the Marty Supreme clothing line, which quickly sold out. After a three-year hiatus from the Paris runway, Nahmias made a triumphant return with his latest collection. He has also announced an upcoming collaboration with Formula One, featuring multiple pop-ups and drops.

The show at the Palais de Tokyo exuded Californian optimism, with a soundtrack of The Beach Boys’s “Good Vibrations” setting the tone. The collection showcased 39 looks that paid homage to Californian style, with beaded denim, gray camo pants, oversized swim trunks, and tailored pieces with a unique Nahmias twist. The designer reimagined traditional suiting elements, such as trousers with waistbands reminiscent of swim trunks and cords at the bottom for a playful touch.

One of the highlights of the collection was the chunky sweaters, described as “very Kurt Cobain-ish” by fashion editor Gro Curtis, who consults for Nahmias. The show kicked off with a Puma collaboration, featuring the Puma Suede in three colorways set for release in February, followed by the Puma Speedcat and accompanying apparel line in April. Nahmias also introduced loafers, boat shoes, new accessories, and high-end jewelry pieces, including a striking mushroom-shaped pendant.

Nahmias’s design ethos revolves around creating clothes that he and his friends, including celebrities like Timothée Chalamet, Justin Bieber, and Charles Leclerc, would want to wear. His approach is practical and grounded, with a focus on streetwear that evolves subtly each season. The latest collection incorporates hand-drawn cartoons by artist John Massé, inspired by ’90s cartoons. These characters make appearances on sweaters, bags, and keychains, adding a playful and nostalgic touch to the collection.

Overall, Nahmias’s “Wipeout” collection is a testament to his unique vision and ability to capture the essence of surf and skate culture in a fresh and elevated way. With a growing list of collaborations and a loyal following of fashion-forward enthusiasts, Doni Nahmias is poised to make a lasting impact on the fashion industry.
