In a quintessentially Portland-style protest, residents took to the streets … in the buff!
The largest city in Oregon showed remarkable audacity on Sunday, cycling in minimal attire to voice their outrage against the ongoing federal immigration actions by ICE, alongside President Donald Trump‘s threats to deploy National Guard forces to the city.
The protest was an “emergency” edition of the annual World Naked Bike Rideâtypically a summer eventâwhere cyclists made their way to the local U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office on Sunday.
A 51-year-old participant, Janene King, enjoyed a cup of tea while sharing with the Associated Press that this was a “perfectly Portland way to protest.” Despite the chilly 50-degree weather, she donned only wool socks, a wig, and a hat for warmth.
The event’s organizers shared on Instagram, stating, “Joy is a form of protest. Togetherness, mutual respect, and kindness are also forms of protest. You decide how much or how little you choose to wear.” The city has recently seen a rise in demonstrations featuring participants in inflatable animal and cartoon character outfits.
The residents of Portland are awaiting news regarding whether Trump has the authority to send troops into the city. A federal judge intervened on October 5, imposing a temporary block on the potential deployment.
