A DNA sample collected from Nancy Guthrie’s residence in Arizona is currently being rigorously analyzed at the FBI’s crime laboratory as the investigation reaches its 100th day. Authorities remain hopeful for a significant breakthrough in the case.
Initially, the DNA sample from the 84-year-old’s home was sent by Pima County sheriff’s detectives to a private laboratory in Florida, even though federal authorities had offered to conduct the analysis at their advanced facility. Eventually, several weeks after Nancy’s disappearance, the evidence was handed over to federal investigators for further examination.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific type of DNA being examined or its exact location of origin. However, law enforcement sources informed CBS News that the analysis is ongoing.
Retired FBI special agent Jason Pack highlighted that DNA analysis, which often involves reconstructing entire family trees to pinpoint suspects, is far more time-consuming than what is typically portrayed in crime dramas. “That kind of work is slow because it has to be right,” he explained.
Former FBI special agent in Arizona, Lance Leising, noted that while an item with DNA, like a hair strand found in a house, is significant, a hair strand located near the victim’s last known position, such as in her bed, would be a top priority for the FBI.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, criticized for mishandling DNA evidence and initially excluding the federal agency from the investigation, declined to comment on the ongoing sample analysis, stating, “It would be highly inappropriate of me to speak to the evidence. We have to keep the integrity of this case.”

“If we make an arrest, that individual has the right to a fair trial, I can’t sit here and address all of that.”
“We are working hard with all of our partners to resolve this case, and we will,” he added.
The search for “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother reached its 100th day on Monday.
Nancy is believed to have been abducted from her Tucson residence in the early hours of February 1.
Later, unsettling security footage from her doorbell camera revealed a masked individual lingering around her doorstep on the night police suspect she was taken.
Bloodstains were subsequently found on her front doorstep.
As the search for the grandmother extends beyond 100 days, investigators have yet to identify any credible leads or suspects in the case.
