Tommaso reportedly drove her back to her home in Catalina Foothills later that night, dropping her off around 9:48 p.m. The following day, Nancy failed to show up for a planned gathering with a friend to watch a church service livestream, prompting her loved ones to report her missing.

Upon investigation, authorities found Nancy’s belongings – including her keys, wallet, and phone – at her home, along with blood spatters on the door. The situation took a chilling turn when ransom letters, demanding $6 million in bitcoin for Nancy’s safe return, were received by the Guthrie family and various media outlets. Despite the threats, there was no concrete evidence to confirm that Nancy was in the hands of kidnappers or even alive.
