Giannis Antetokounmpo Becomes First NBA Player to Invest in Prediction Market

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the star player of the Milwaukee Bucks, made headlines on Friday when he announced that he had become a shareholder in the prediction market Kalshi. This move marks him as the first NBA player to directly invest in the company.

In a social media post, the two-time NBA MVP expressed his excitement about joining Kalshi as a shareholder, stating, “The internet is full of opinions. I decided it was time to make some of my own. Today, I’m joining Kalshi as a shareholder. We all on Kalshi now.”

Despite Antetokounmpo’s enthusiasm, the announcement has sparked controversy on social media. Some users on platforms like Reddit have criticized the move, with one calling it a “conflict of interest” and another labeling Kalshi as “cancerous.” Questions have also been raised about the legality of an NBA player investing in such a platform.

However, according to a report by The Athletic, the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement does allow players to advertise and hold stakes of up to 1% in sports betting companies, as long as they are not promoting league-related wagers.

Kalshi has stated that they will collaborate with Antetokounmpo on marketing and live events. It is important to note that the company has strict terms of service in place to prevent insider trading and market manipulation. As a result, Antetokounmpo will be prohibited from trading on markets related to the NBA.
