ROCKINGHAM, NC — Michele Hundley Smith, a North Carolina mother of three who disappeared in 2001, has resurfaced after being arrested for failing to appear in court. The 62-year-old was found near the South Carolina border and taken into custody after an active arrest warrant was discovered for a drunk driving charge from November 2001, just before she went missing while Christmas shopping.
Smith’s mug shot, taken after her arrest, shows a worn and teary-eyed woman who has spent 24 years on the run from her family and the law. She was arrested at the request of Rockingham County authorities and posted a $2,000 bond to be released ahead of a court appearance on March 26.
According to the arrest report, Smith has been living in a trailer park in a remote area of the state, far from the family home she abandoned all those years ago. The discovery of her whereabouts came after a lengthy search, nearly a quarter of a century after she vanished without a trace.
Smith had told her family she was going Christmas shopping at a Kmart in Virginia, but never returned. She cited ongoing domestic issues as the reason for leaving her husband and children behind. However, her daughter Amanda revealed that her mother had a drinking problem and was fired from a job for drinking on the premises.
Despite the absence of prior domestic reports and no evidence of foul play, Smith’s disappearance left her family with unanswered questions for over two decades. Now that she has been found, Amanda expressed mixed emotions of joy, anger, heartbreak, and confusion about the situation on social media.
The desire for a family reunion lingers for Amanda, as she navigates the complex emotions surrounding her mother’s sudden reappearance. The case of Michele Hundley Smith serves as a reminder of the mysteries and complexities of human relationships, as well as the enduring impact of unresolved family issues.
