Escaped Inmate Found Hiding in 75-Year-Old Woman’s Car
A 75-year-old woman, Marie Steinburg, had a terrifying experience when she discovered an escaped inmate hiding in the backseat of her car on Monday morning. The incident took place in Edenton, North Carolina, where Steinburg, the wife of former State Senator Bob Steinberg, found 23-year-old Charles Babb, who had escaped from the Chowan County Detention Center, crouched in her Honda Civic.
Steinburg recounted how she unlocked her car and saw movement in the backseat, which startled her. Babb, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit with a blanket wrapped around him, had managed to get inside the vehicle. Despite the initial shock, Steinburg remained calm and engaged in conversation with the fugitive.
According to reports, Babb apologized and expressed that he was cold. Steinburg, showing empathy, offered to get him a coat. However, Babb quickly fled the scene, leaving behind his prison sandals and a face mask. Steinburg then alerted her husband and called 911, leading to the swift capture of the convict by the Edenton Police Department.
