Netflix in Exclusive Talks to Acquire Warner Bros. Discovery
After a fierce bidding war, Netflix has emerged as the front-runner in exclusive talks to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery’s film and television studio, as well as the HBO Max streaming service, as confirmed by Variety. This development comes after weeks of negotiations between Netflix and rival bidders Paramount Skydance and Comcast.
Paramount Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison, initially sought to purchase the entirety of Warner Bros. Discovery in an all-cash deal. However, both Netflix and Comcast only submitted bids for the company’s studio and streaming businesses.
Prior to any potential sale to Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery plans to spin off its cable channels, including CNN, TBS, TNT, TruTV, and the Discovery Channel.
The bidding war reached its peak with Paramount submitting a formidable offer, backed by three Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds. Paramount also raised concerns about the transparency of the sales process, accusing Netflix of impropriety.
If a deal is reached between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery, it would have a significant impact on the media landscape. Netflix, the leader in paid streaming services, would acquire the renowned Warner Bros. library, including DC Studios’ comic book characters, HBO series, and iconic franchises like Harry Potter.
However, the potential acquisition is expected to face antitrust scrutiny. A group of A-list talent recently penned an open letter to Congress expressing concerns about Netflix’s growing influence and its potential impact on the theatrical marketplace.
