The documentary “In Waves and War” follows a group of Navy SEALS who turn to psychedelic therapy as a last resort in treating their post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries, and severe depression. Streaming on Netflix since November 3, 2025, the film showcases the journey these veterans undertake as they travel to Mexico for psychedelic-assisted ibogaine therapy.
Recently, the film gained attention from lawmakers after a screening for the Texas State legislature, leading to the approval of $50 million in state funding for ibogaine drug development trials. Directed by Jon Shenk and Bonni Cohen, known for their work on documentaries such as “Athlete A” and “Lost Boys of Sudan,” “In Waves and War” proved to be their most complex and artistically fulfilling project to date.
The filmmakers shared that the project began in 2019 when they were introduced to Marcus and Amber Capone, a retired Navy SEAL and his wife, who had undergone psychedelic therapy for their own struggles with PTSD and other related conditions. Building trust within the SEAL community took time, as the culture is notoriously private. Eventually, the filmmakers focused on the Capones and a group of SEALs who had also sought treatment.
The challenges of making the documentary included gaining access and trust within the SEAL community, as well as accurately depicting the psychedelic experiences of the veterans. Through patience, humility, and creativity, the filmmakers were able to capture the raw and personal journey of the veterans undergoing therapy.
The ultimate goal of “In Waves and War” is to showcase the power of connection and healing through transformative therapies. By sharing intimate human stories, the film aims to highlight the impact of one person’s healing journey on their family, community, and society as a whole.
Overall, “In Waves and War” sheds light on the potential benefits of psychedelic therapy for treating PTSD and other mental health conditions in veterans, sparking important conversations and potential legislative action.
