Netflix has officially kicked off production on a series adaptation of Miles Franklin’s iconic Australian novel “My Brilliant Career,” with filming currently taking place at Adelaide Studios and various locations across South Australia.

The streaming service has teamed up with Jungle Entertainment to bring this period drama to life, offering a fresh perspective on Franklin’s 1901 story that follows the journey of young Australian women striving for independence and self-determination.

The series is set in rural Australia during the early 20th century and centers around Sybylla Melvyn, a determined and ambitious young woman who dreams of literary success and refuses to conform to the societal norms imposed on women of her time. Born into a struggling farming family, Sybylla must navigate the challenges of her social status while pursuing her artistic aspirations and grappling with themes of love, duty, and personal fulfillment. Her story becomes a powerful declaration of female autonomy in a society that often limits women to roles of marriage and motherhood.

Leading the cast is Philippa Northeast, known for her work in “Territory” and “The Newsreader,” in the role of Sybylla. She is joined by Christopher Chung as Harry, Anna Chancellor as Mrs. Bossier, and Genevieve O’Reilly as Helen. The ensemble also includes talented actors such as Kate Mulvany, Jake Dunn, Alexander England, Sherry-Lee Watson, and Miah Madden.

This adaptation of Franklin’s novel follows in the footsteps of Gillian Armstrong’s acclaimed 1979 film, which starred Judy Davis and Sam Neill and received critical acclaim and multiple awards. Executive producer and writer Liz Doran is spearheading the project, expressing her excitement about reimagining Franklin’s captivating tale of a young woman’s quest for autonomy.

The series represents Netflix’s ongoing commitment to Australian content, with Minyoung Kim, Netflix VP of content APAC (excluding India), highlighting the timeless relevance of “My Brilliant Career.” The support from the South Australian Film Corporation underscores the local impact of the production, with CEO Kate Croser emphasizing the collaboration with local talent and crews.

Director Alyssa McClelland will oversee the first three episodes, with Anne Renton taking on episodes four through six and serving as co-producer. The production team includes Paul Ranford as producer and Courtney Wise as co-executive producer. The writing team consists of Doran, Sarinah Masukor, and Rachael Turk, with Shari Sebbens as associate producer.

Key department heads include production designer Felicity Abbott, director of photography Kieran Fowler, costume designer Mariot Kerr, and hair and makeup designer Zeljka Stanin. Marden Dean serves as the second block director of photography, with casting by Nikki Barrett in Australia and Nathan Toth in the U.K.

With a talented cast and crew, stunning locations, and a timeless story, the series adaptation of “My Brilliant Career” is set to captivate audiences and bring this Australian classic to a whole new generation on Netflix.
