Rep. Mark Amodei Announces Retirement from Congress
Rep. Mark Amodei (R-Nev.), the leading Republican on the DHS appropriations subcommittee, declared on Friday that he will not be seeking reelection to the House this year.
The eight-term congressman is merely the latest notable Republican to signal his retirement amidst an increasingly uncertain midterm landscape for the GOP.
“I came to Congress to solve problems and to ensure our State and Nation have a robust voice in federal policy and oversight processes,” he stated. “I look forward to finishing my term.”
Amodei represents a Republican-leaning district, which is expected to remain in GOP control even during a challenging year for the party nationally. Notably, he is the sole Republican in Nevada’s congressional delegation.
His retirement announcement arrives just three months after receiving a “Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-election” from former President Donald Trump in November, a period during which it seemed Amodei was poised to run again.
“Thank you Mr. President @realDonaldTrump!” Amodei tweeted at the time.
Ironically, just over a week prior to his retirement announcement, Amodei distinguished himself as one of the few Republican voices to challenge aspects of the former President’s agenda. He advocated for a “pivot” in ICE’s core mission in Minnesota. Furthermore, he spearheaded a DHS funding bill that included specific provisions for body cameras for ICE agents and enhanced de-escalation training for DHS personnel.
Amodei has also aimed to restrict the Department of Homeland Security’s ability to reallocate congressionally appropriated funds within this year’s budget for the agency. This initiative, which he acknowledged in January might not win him any popularity contests with White House officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, highlights his complicated relationship with the current administration.
However, the push for a federal funding agreement for DHS has recently stalled due to ongoing turmoil in Minnesota. With Congress facing a ticking clock, a government shutdown threatening the agency looms large.
