A Military Veteran Takes Charge at Colorado Parks and Wildlife

After a unanimous vote by state officials on Monday, Laura Clellan, a longtime military leader, will step into the role of director at Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Clellan has been serving as interim director since December 1, following the previous director’s reassignment to avoid termination.

Speaking after her official appointment, Clellan expressed her excitement for the new challenge ahead. CPW, responsible for managing the state’s wildlife, hunting and fishing programs, as well as overseeing numerous state parks and wildlife areas, generates significant revenue annually.

Despite ongoing controversies surrounding CPW’s reintroduction of wolves and challenges from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clellan’s leadership during her interim role has been praised by Governor Jared Polis. Prior to her current position, Clellan held roles within the Colorado Department of Military and Veterans Affairs before retiring in October.

With over 30 years of military service, Clellan brings a wealth of experience to the state wildlife agency. Her background includes positions with the U.S. Army, Colorado National Guard, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Named as the sole finalist after a nationwide search, Clellan’s appointment comes after the resignation of the previous director, Jeff Davis, who now serves as deputy director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Clellan’s proven leadership and experience make her well-equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities facing CPW in the coming years.
