Three Newly-Discovered Species of Deep Sea ‘Spiders’ Found to Farm Methane-Eating Bacteria

A recent discovery by a team led by Bianca Dal Bó from Occidental College in the US has unveiled three new species of sea spiders that engage in a unique symbiotic relationship with methane-eating bacteria. These creatures, although not actual spiders or arachnids, have adapted to life in the deep sea where sunlight does not penetrate beyond 1000 meters.

The newly identified sea spider species, all members of the genus Sericosura, were found exclusively at methane seeps off the coast of Southern California and Alaska. Remote-operated vehicle dives in 2021 and 2023 collected specimens from depths ranging from 397 meters to 2020 meters below sea level.

One of the most fascinating aspects of these sea spiders is their cultivation of methane-eating bacteria on their bodies. These bacteria convert methane and methanol into carbon and energy, providing a unique source of sustenance for the sea spiders. Lab experiments confirmed that the sea spiders consume these bacteria directly from their bodies, enabling them to thrive in their methane-rich environment.

Interestingly, other methane-seep animals have also formed symbiotic relationships with similar groups of bacteria, but the sea spiders appear to host all three families of methane- and methanol-oxidizing bacteria simultaneously. This finding sets them apart from other methane-seep dwellers.

Furthermore, the researchers observed that the bacterial ‘gardens’ on the sea spiders were functionally identical across different seep locations, suggesting a potential inheritance of the bacteria from one generation to the next. Male sea spiders were found carrying and brooding egg sacs filled with methane-loving bacteria, indicating a transference of the symbiotic relationship to their offspring.

This discovery sheds light on the diverse survival strategies employed by deep-sea creatures and underscores the intricate ecological relationships that exist even in the most extreme environments. The research, published in PNAS, provides valuable insights into the evolution and adaptation of marine organisms in methane-rich habitats.

The world of fashion is constantly evolving, with new trends emerging every season. From bold prints to statement accessories, there is always something new to look forward to in the fashion industry. One trend that has been gaining popularity in recent years is sustainable fashion.

Sustainable fashion is all about creating clothing and accessories in an environmentally and socially responsible way. This means using eco-friendly materials, reducing waste and pollution, and ensuring fair labor practices throughout the supply chain. It’s a movement that is gaining traction as consumers become more conscious of the impact their purchases have on the planet.

One of the key elements of sustainable fashion is using sustainable materials. This includes organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, and recycled fabrics. These materials are grown and produced in a way that minimizes harm to the environment, such as using less water and pesticides. By choosing clothing made from sustainable materials, consumers can feel good about their purchase knowing that they are supporting companies that are making a positive impact on the planet.

Another important aspect of sustainable fashion is reducing waste. Many fashion brands are now adopting a circular economy model, where they design products with the intention of recycling or upcycling them at the end of their life cycle. This means that clothing can be repurposed or recycled into new garments, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

In addition to using sustainable materials and reducing waste, sustainable fashion also focuses on fair labor practices. This means ensuring that garment workers are paid a fair wage, have safe working conditions, and are treated with respect. By supporting companies that prioritize fair labor practices, consumers can help improve the lives of garment workers around the world.

One of the challenges of sustainable fashion is making it accessible and affordable for everyone. While some sustainable clothing brands can be on the pricier side, there are more and more affordable options becoming available. Thrift stores, second-hand clothing websites, and clothing rental services are all great ways to shop sustainably without breaking the bank.

Overall, sustainable fashion is a trend that is here to stay. By choosing clothing made from sustainable materials, reducing waste, and supporting fair labor practices, consumers can make a positive impact on the planet and the fashion industry as a whole. As more and more people become aware of the importance of sustainability, we can expect to see even more innovative and stylish options in the world of sustainable fashion.
