First spotted on July 1 by Larry Denneau of the University of Hawaii, using the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Chile, 3I/ATLAS has captured the attention of astronomers globally. The object’s hyperbolic trajectory confirms its interstellar origins, making it a rare and fascinating subject of study.

Researchers have been working tirelessly to observe and gather data on 3I/ATLAS before it disappears back into interstellar space later this year. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Hubble Space Telescope are among the powerful observatories set to analyze this celestial visitor, offering a unique glimpse into the mysteries of our universe.

Stefanie Milam from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center recounts the challenges faced by astronomers in coordinating observations of 3I/ATLAS, highlighting the urgency and excitement surrounding this rare opportunity. The object’s origin is a key focus of investigation, with scientists hoping to trace its path back to its stellar source.

Recent studies suggest that 3I/ATLAS may have originated from the thick disk region of our galaxy, indicating an ancient age of billions of years. Estimates of the object’s size vary, with initial predictions of up to 20 kilometers in diameter now revised to a more modest one or two kilometers.

As 3I/ATLAS approaches the orbit of Mars, astronomers anticipate a change in its behavior as it warms up and begins to exhibit typical comet characteristics. The development of a coma and tail will complicate size measurements but provide valuable insights into the nature of this interstellar visitor.

The discovery of 3I/ATLAS has reignited interest in interstellar objects and their role in shaping our understanding of the universe. Astronomers eagerly await further observations and data that will shed light on the origins and characteristics of this fascinating comet from beyond our solar system. Astronomers are buzzing with excitement over the recent discovery of a massive object hurtling through our solar system. Known as 3I/ATLAS, this mysterious interstellar visitor has piqued the curiosity of scientists around the world.

“It’s statistically extremely unlikely we should ever see something that size,” says astronomer David Noonan. “Theorists don’t like that. But as an observer, I would love to see a really weird, big object.”

One of the key properties that astronomers are eager to uncover about 3I/ATLAS is its rotation rate. By observing the object’s changing brightness as it spins, scientists hope to unravel clues about how it was ejected from its home star. The spin of 3I/ATLAS could provide insights into the object’s origins and history.

“Certain ways of kicking these objects out tend to make them spin up,” explains astronomer Taylor. A close pass of a gas giant planet, for example, could set the object twirling while propelling it away from its home star. On the other hand, a slow rotation period might indicate a gentler ejection process.

The rotation period can also shed light on the shape of 3I/ATLAS. A steady rotation would suggest a spherical form, while a fluctuating rotation speed could indicate a more irregular shape, similar to that of ‘Oumuamua, which was estimated to be cigar- or pancake-shaped.

In addition to its rotation rate, scientists are eager to determine the composition of 3I/ATLAS. If the object is an ancient cometary castaway rich in ice, it could erupt into activity as it approaches the sun. This would provide valuable insights into its chemical makeup.

JWST and Hubble are poised to analyze the emissions from 3I/ATLAS and identify substances such as hydroxide and hydrogen that can help decipher its composition. Unfortunately, observations from Earth will be challenging when the object is at its closest point to the sun in October.

Despite this obstacle, researchers are optimistic about using advanced telescopes to study 3I/ATLAS both before and after perihelion. JWST, with its keen infrared vision, is well-suited to detect molecules such as water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and ammonia.

The Lowell Observatory in Arizona is also prepared to observe 3I/ATLAS at dawn and dusk, providing valuable data even when the object is close to the sun from Earth’s perspective. Additionally, spacecraft like NASA’s MAVEN orbiter at Mars may catch a glimpse of 3I/ATLAS as it passes by the planet.

One looming question is whether 3I/ATLAS will survive its close encounter with the sun. While ‘Oumuamua managed to do so, Comet Borisov met a different fate, breaking apart as it exited our solar system. Scientists will be closely monitoring 3I/ATLAS to see if it suffers a similar fate.

The impact of solar wind on 3I/ATLAS’s survivability is also a factor to consider. Solar wind may erode any cometary tail the object develops as it is ejected from our solar system. The coming months will reveal more about this enigmatic interstellar visitor and its ultimate fate. Interstellar objects have always been a source of fascination and mystery for astronomers. The recent discovery of 3I/ATLAS, the third interstellar visitor in eight years, has sparked renewed interest in these elusive cosmic wanderers.

However, the upcoming European Space Agency (ESA) mission, Comet Interceptor, scheduled to launch in 2029, might attempt to visit another interstellar object if one is found within its reach. The spacecraft will be positioned beyond the moon’s orbit and could potentially intercept an incoming interstellar object if the opportunity arises.

The abundance of interstellar objects in our galaxy remains a subject of speculation. Predictions suggest that there could be trillions upon trillions of these objects drifting through space, with perhaps one in our solar system at any given time. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, set to begin a 10-year sky survey later this year, is expected to shed light on the prevalence of interstellar objects. The observatory may observe between six and 51 interstellar objects during its survey, providing valuable insights into the formation and distribution of these cosmic nomads.

One intriguing mystery surrounding interstellar objects is the apparent absence of smaller objects. While larger interstellar visitors like 3I/ATLAS have been detected, smaller objects that should be more plentiful have not been observed entering our atmosphere as meteors. This discrepancy raises questions about the survivability of smaller interstellar objects and underscores the need for more data to unravel the mysteries of these cosmic travelers.

As astronomers continue to study and monitor interstellar objects like 3I/ATLAS, the hope is that these celestial visitors will offer valuable insights into the nature of our galaxy and the processes that govern the formation and evolution of planetary systems.
