This has resulted in a staggering 402 confirmed attacks on science between January and June of this year alone, surpassing the total number of attacks documented during the entirety of President Trump’s first term.
The administration’s relentless assault on science manifests in various ways, including slashing the federal workforce, cutting funding for critical research, excluding scientists from decision-making processes, dismantling independent advisory committees, and disseminating misinformation to distort scientific facts and halt data collection efforts. These actions have real-world consequences, as evidenced by the administration’s recent move to grant corporations a “Presidential Exemption” from Clean Air Act regulations, allowing them to pollute with impunity.
The exemption, which applies to facilities emitting hazardous pollutants like mercury and ethylene oxide, poses a significant threat to public health, particularly in marginalized communities already burdened by toxic air pollution. By bypassing public participation processes and disregarding scientific evidence, the administration is prioritizing the interests of corporate polluters over the well-being of the public.
Our report calls on lawmakers to support legislation that safeguards the use of science in decision-making processes and promotes transparency and accountability in government actions. Initiatives like the Scientific Integrity Act, the EXPERTS Act, and the Whistleblower Protection Act are crucial in upholding scientific integrity and protecting the public interest.
