A horrifying incident unfolded on 18th Street near 6th Avenue on Tuesday afternoon when a pregnant woman was viciously attacked by a “disheveled lunatic” with a metal rod. Witnesses and police reported that the victim, a 35-year-old brunette dressed in a fashionable leather jacket and slacks, was left screaming in agony on the ground after the brutal assault.
Norman Ross, one of the witnesses, described the attacker as unkempt and wearing a leather jerkin over a robe and high-top sneakers. It was evident that the victim had no prior connection to the assailant. Ross, along with his friend Matthew Malin, attempted to intervene in the situation, but the aggressor turned his threats towards them, causing fear and chaos on the streets of New York City.
Despite their initial attempts to stop the attacker, the pregnant woman managed to flee to her nearby apartment, while the assailant continued to roam the area, muttering incoherently and making more threats towards bystanders. Malin called the police, and Ross and his friend assisted in locating the suspect a few blocks away.
Authorities swiftly apprehended the suspect, identified as Raquan El, 37, without further incident. El was charged with assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon, as the metal rod he used was found to be filled with wood. Law enforcement sources revealed that El had prior arrests for various offenses, including criminal possession of a weapon, forcible touching, criminal trespassing, and burglary.
The pregnant victim, after identifying the assailant at the 13th Precinct, was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of pain and swelling. Fortunately, she was reported to be in stable condition. Ross, a seasoned weightlifter, and his friend, who is trained in combat, expressed their unease at the encounter, emphasizing the escalating violence in the city.
Ross reflected on the changing landscape of New York City, lamenting the senseless nature of the attack on the pregnant woman. He acknowledged the challenges faced by individuals in desperate situations but condemned such brutal acts of violence. The police commended Ross and Malin for their assistance and provided them with a ride to Westway Diner, where they finally managed to enjoy a meal amidst the chaos and tension of the day.
