Proposal to Rename New York Strip Steak to Texas Strip Steak
A proposal has been put forward to rename the classic New York strip steak to the Texas strip steak in a move that aims to showcase Texas as the cow capital of America.
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick suggested the name change to better represent the state’s significant cattle population, which stands at 12.2 million, the highest in the country.
Inspired by President Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, Patrick is urging state lawmakers to approve the change through a formal resolution. This would require all local restaurants and grocery stores to update their menus with the new name.
During a visit to the Texas Cattle Feeders and Cattle Raisers, Patrick questioned why the steak wasn’t called a “Texas Strip” since New York primarily focuses on dairy cows.
According to Patrick, “Liberal New York shouldn’t get the credit for our hard-working ranchers. We promote the Texas brand to benefit our economy and create jobs.”
The cattle industry in Texas holds a market value of approximately $15.5 billion, making it the largest agricultural commodity in the state.
New York strip steak, a term popularized by Delmonico’s, a historic steakhouse in New York City, has been the standard name for strip steak in the US. The restaurant inadvertently labeled it as the New York strip on its menu, leading to widespread adoption of the name.
