Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been at the center of trade rumors ever since Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel made the decision to bench him in favor of rookie signal-caller Quinn Ewers. This move came after Tagovailoa’s lackluster performances this season, where he led the league with 15 interceptions before being demoted to the third-string quarterback.

The speculation surrounding Tagovailoa’s future with the Dolphins has only intensified, especially after an NFL executive provided a blunt assessment of the quarterback in a survey conducted by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. “I wouldn’t feel comfortable with him as my starter if I needed one,” an NFC executive stated.

Despite the doubts surrounding Tagovailoa, the Dolphins had signed him to a lucrative four-year, $212.4 million extension in July 2024, with a reported $53.1 million average annual value. This hefty contract could potentially deter any potential suitors, as one AFC executive mentioned that it would depend on free agency and the draft whether a team would be willing to absorb his contract via trade.

With Tagovailoa guaranteed $167.1 million under his contract, including $54 million for the 2026 season, there are concerns about the financial implications of his contract. An anonymous NFL executive acknowledged the challenge the Dolphins face with his expensive deal, stating that cutting him wouldn’t help them financially and that they may try to trade him first.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has stood by his decision to bench Tagovailoa, despite the team’s struggles in a 45-21 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals with Ewers at the helm. Ewers’ performance in his first NFL start was mixed, completing 20 of 30 pass attempts for 260 yards and two interceptions. McDaniel defended his decision, emphasizing the importance of giving the team the best chance to win.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether the Dolphins will stick with Tagovailoa or explore other options, especially with approximately $111.4 million remaining on his contract. The quarterback’s future in Miami hangs in the balance as the team navigates through a challenging season.

Overall, the situation surrounding Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins is a complex one, with financial considerations and on-field performance playing significant roles in determining the quarterback’s future with the team. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on how the Dolphins handle this delicate situation and what decisions they ultimately make regarding Tagovailoa’s tenure with the team.
