NHL player poll: As sports betting increases, so do harassing messages — and Venmo requests

In the fast-paced world of professional hockey, NHL players are constantly bombarded with notifications on their phones after a game. From messages of congratulations to reminders from loved ones, the influx of communication is overwhelming. However, in recent years, a new type of notification has been vying for the attention of players – messages from disgruntled sports bettors.

According to a survey conducted by The Athletic, NHL players have reported receiving Venmo requests from fans who have lost money betting on their games. One player mentioned receiving a request for $50 after a disappointing loss, while another player admitted to paying back a fan $20 to settle a bet. While some players find these requests amusing, others have experienced more troubling interactions.

Nearly one-third of the players surveyed revealed that they have been receiving harassing messages from fans since sports betting has become more widespread. Goalies, in particular, seem to be targeted more frequently, with one player stating that 75 percent of the messages he receives are negative, often blaming him for losing bets.

One of the most surprising findings from the survey was the prevalence of Venmo demands from bettors. Players shared stories of fans demanding money because they were on the ice during a crucial play that affected the outcome of a bet. Some players have even received death threats and vulgar messages from angry gamblers.

While some of these messages are clearly meant as jokes, others have a more sinister undertone. One player mentioned receiving threatening messages from fans in Russia, including death threats after a loss. Despite the prevalence of these messages, two-thirds of the players surveyed claimed that they do not receive any harassing messages, suggesting that high-profile players may be targeted more frequently.

In response to the onslaught of negative messages, many players have chosen to disconnect from social media entirely. Some have turned off notifications or deactivated their accounts to avoid the constant barrage of messages. While some players find humor in the situation, others are genuinely concerned about their safety.

Despite the challenges posed by sports betting and the influx of messages from disgruntled fans, NHL players remain focused on their performance on the ice. While they may sympathize with bettors who have lost money, ultimately, their priority is to play their best and help their team succeed.
