Amazon Workers in Garner, NC Reject Unionization
In a recent announcement, workers at an Amazon warehouse in Garner, North Carolina have voted against unionizing in the election results revealed today. According to Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (CAUSE), the group seeking to form the union, a total of 3,276 ballots were cast in the election. Of these, 25.3% were in favor of unionizing while 74.7% were against. It is important to note that these results are pending certification by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
CAUSE, in a statement provided to CNBC, attributed the outcome to “Amazon’s willingness to break the law.” They alleged that Amazon engaged in illegal tactics to intimidate workers and prevent them from exercising their right to unionize. On the other hand, Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards refuted these claims, stating that the company had not violated any laws. Hards expressed satisfaction that the workers in Garner had the opportunity to voice their opinions and chose to maintain a direct relationship with Amazon.
This development comes in the wake of successful unionization votes at other Amazon facilities, such as the Staten Island warehouse in 2022 and a Philadelphia location of Amazon-owned Whole Foods earlier this year. However, Whole Foods has requested the NLRB to review and potentially overturn the results of the unionization vote at their store.
In a separate legal matter, Amazon’s legal team has teamed up with SpaceX to challenge the structure of the NLRB. This move underscores the ongoing tensions between tech companies and labor organizations in navigating the complexities of labor laws and regulations.
