USS Paul Ignatius (DDG 117) arrived in Narvik, Norway, March 15, 2024, following its participation in the largest NATO exercise since World War II, Steadfast Defender.

A Norwegian marine fuel supplier recently found itself in hot water after attempting to cut off fuel supplies to the U.S. military, only to face backlash and intervention from the Norwegian government.

Haltbakk Bunkers, a key fuel provider in Norway, made headlines when it announced its decision to no longer supply fuel to American military vessels in Norwegian ports. The move was reportedly a response to President Donald Trump’s firm America First foreign policy stance.

The tension escalated following a contentious exchange between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump, accompanied by Vice President J.D. Vance, criticized Zelenskyy for what he perceived as a lack of commitment to peace negotiations with Russia, accusing him of “gambling with World War Three” before abruptly ending the meeting.

In a bold statement on social media, Haltbakk Bunkers declared, “No Fuel to Americans!” and urged other European companies to follow suit, citing their disapproval of Trump’s approach to international relations.

The company’s owner, Gunnar Gran, went further in an interview with Norwegian business outlet Kystens Næringsliv, stating that he would withhold fuel supplies to American forces until Trump’s term is over.

Despite initial support from leftist activists and anti-Trump Europeans, the company faced swift backlash and embarrassment, prompting them to delete their inflammatory statement. The Norwegian government, through Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik, affirmed its commitment to supporting the U.S. military in Norway, emphasizing the strong defense cooperation between the two nations.

Sandvik’s statement reassured that all necessary support would continue to be provided to American forces in Norway, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a close relationship with the U.S., Norway’s strongest ally.

In conclusion, the incident serves as a reminder of the complexities of geopolitics and the significance of diplomatic relations between nations, even in the face of political disagreements.
