Nothing Phone (3a) Pro Review: Second Fiddle

The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro has been making waves in the smartphone market, with its unique design and customizable features. The phone, priced at $459, offers a range of pros including strong performance, great battery life, a gorgeous display, and slick, customizable software. However, it also comes with some cons such as disappointing low-light camera performance, a poor ultrawide camera, and a bulky rear camera module.

The design of the Phone (3a) Pro is distinctive, with a semi-transparent back and signature ‘Glyph’ lights. The rear camera module is a standout feature, although it adds bulk to the device. The addition of the ‘Essential Key’ button for quick access to voice notes, photos, and screenshots is a unique touch. The phone is well-built and durable, with an IP64 water and dust resistance rating.

The 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display of the Phone (3a) Pro is top-notch, offering vibrant colors and sharp details. The 120Hz refresh rate adds to the smooth user experience. The under-display fingerprint sensor is fast and accurate, while the stereo speakers provide quality audio output.

In terms of performance, the Phone (3a) Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset and 12GB of RAM. It handles everyday tasks with ease, although gaming performance may show some limitations. The 256GB of non-expandable storage should be sufficient for most users.

The camera setup of the Phone (3a) Pro includes a 50Mp main lens, a 50Mp periscope telephoto lens, an 8Mp ultrawide lens, and a 50Mp selfie camera. While the camera performance is good in optimal lighting conditions, it struggles in low light and harsh lighting situations. The phone offers impressive macro photography capabilities but falls short in the ultrawide lens department.

Battery life on the Phone (3a) Pro is solid, with a 5000mAh battery that can easily last a full day on a single charge. The 50W wired charging provides fast charging capabilities, although wireless charging is not supported.

The software experience on the Phone (3a) Pro is a highlight, with NothingOS 3.1 offering a unique and customizable user interface. The ‘Essential Space’ feature allows for quick access to voice notes, photos, and screenshots, although it may need some refinements.

Overall, the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro offers a compelling package with its unique design, strong performance, and customizable software. However, the presence of the more affordable Phone (3a) model may make it a tough sell for some users. The Phone (3a) Pro sits in a middle ground where it offers great features but may not be the best choice for everyone.
