Controversy Surrounding M.F. Husain’s Artworks at Delhi Art Gallery

Recently, two drawings by the late Indian artist Maqbool Fida (M.F.) Husain were seized at the Delhi Art Gallery (DAG) in New Delhi’s Connaught Place following a legal complaint filed by a visitor affiliated with the city’s court system. The complainant alleged that the works, depicting Hindu deities in a controversial manner, were offensive.

One of the drawings features the elephant god Ganesh with a nude woman seated on his knee, while the other shows the monkey god Hanuman holding a naked woman in his hand with his tail wrapped around the neck of an assailant.

In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for DAG stated that the gallery stands by its belief in artistic freedom and denies any wrongdoing as claimed by the complainant, who allegedly has a religious agenda.

The gallery cooperated with the investigation, providing security camera footage and other evidence as requested.

Amita Sachdeva, an advocate for the Delhi High Court, publicly shared her complaint on social media, stating that the gallery had removed the works from display in response to her complaint.

Sachdeva alleged that the artworks violated a specific clause in India’s criminal code related to outraging religious sentiments.

Second artwork in complaint

Despite his Muslim background, M.F. Husain was known for incorporating elements from various religious traditions in his art, often facing criticism for his depictions of nudity and sexuality in Hindu mythology.

Following a series of controversies in the 1990s, including death threats and attacks on his shows, Husain left India and lived in self-imposed exile until his death in 2011.

While the judge allowed the seizure of the artworks, no criminal investigation was initiated due to the lack of a cognizable offense. DAG plans to pursue legal action against the complainant for false accusations.

It remains uncertain whether the seized artworks will be returned to the gallery, and Sachdeva has not responded to requests for comment.

The Benefits of Meditation for Mental Health

Meditation has been practiced for centuries as a way to calm the mind, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. In recent years, research has shown that meditation can have numerous benefits for mental health, making it an important tool for managing conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

One of the key benefits of meditation is its ability to reduce stress. When we are stressed, our bodies release hormones such as cortisol, which can have a negative impact on our physical and mental health. By practicing meditation regularly, we can lower our cortisol levels and learn to better manage our stress responses, leading to a calmer and more peaceful state of mind.

In addition to reducing stress, meditation can also help improve our mood and decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression. Studies have shown that meditation can increase levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in regulating mood. By practicing meditation, we can boost our serotonin levels and improve our overall sense of well-being.

Furthermore, meditation can help us develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion. By quieting the mind and focusing on the present moment, we can become more attuned to our thoughts and emotions. This increased self-awareness can help us identify negative thought patterns and behaviors, allowing us to make positive changes in our lives.

Meditation can also help us cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the present moment. By focusing on the here and now, we can learn to let go of worries about the past and future, and instead, embrace the beauty and joy that surrounds us in the present moment.

Overall, the benefits of meditation for mental health are numerous. By practicing meditation regularly, we can reduce stress, improve our mood, develop greater self-awareness, and cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the present moment. If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions, consider incorporating meditation into your daily routine to experience the positive effects for yourself.
