The leaders of the two largest economies in Latin America, Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico and Luiz Inazio Lula da Silva in Brazil, are placing their bets on a different path. In Colombia, Gustavo Petro has condemned both the incursion into Venezuela and the personal threats from Trump against him. While the media in the United States focuses on repeating Trump’s bluster, Sheinbaum and Lula are approaching the situation with seriousness and advocating for a return to collaboration without interventionism, respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Latin American nations. This aligns with the longstanding tradition of both countries of non-interference in the domestic affairs of other nations.
In response to Trump’s implicit and explicit threats against Mexico, Sheinbaum recently stated: “[It is necessary to reaffirm that in Mexico, the people are in charge and we are a free, independent, and sovereign country. Cooperation, yes; subordination and intervention, no.” Lula, on the other hand, affirmed that attacks on Venezuela represent a “serious affront to Venezuela’s sovereignty.”
The war over oil and interventionism are destabilizing the region and the global climate. Unlike in Martí’s time, the use of the Monroe Doctrine and other expressions of global dominance by the United States is driven by the relentless desire to control fossil fuel sources, rare earth elements, and other resources to uphold fossil capitalism.
As my colleague Kathy Muley recently pointed out, investing in the fossil fuel industry is a poor bet for many reasons. Adding more oil to an already saturated global market will not yield short-term profits, worsen the lives of Venezuelans, negatively impact American consumers’ wallets, and further harm the precarious state of the global climate system. The extraction of Venezuela’s extra-heavy oil requires a significant amount of energy, leading to increased emissions during extraction and processing. Millions of Venezuelans have been displaced by the social, economic, and climate crisis in their country. If the situation in Venezuela worsens due to a climate disaster or a large-scale incursion by the United States, it could trigger a surge in displacement to countries in the region like Peru, Mexico, and Colombia, which have already welcomed millions of Venezuelans.
The intervention in Venezuela and the potential seizure of Maduro are desperate moves by the U.S. government to divert attention from its domestic crises – the fallout from the dismantling of the workforce and federal government functions, the Epstein files, access to healthcare services, skyrocketing living costs, and the crackdown on immigrants and political dissent.
The United States is not above international or national laws. Regardless of America’s renewed imperial aspirations and the threat of annexing Greenland in addition to the incursion in Venezuela, we live in a world governed by international and national laws. In the U.S., Congress and all sectors of civil society must demand a return to a state of law concerning the territorial integrity of all countries in the Western Hemisphere. Divvying up the hemisphere according to Trump’s geopolitical interests and those of his fossil fuel industry allies excludes nearly a billion inhabitants from the rest of the hemisphere. The actions of the United States have put the planet on a path that accelerates global warming, exacerbated by regional and global conflicts to control fossil resources. A different world, not based on Trump’s abhorrent notion of the law of the strongest, is possible. The world of technology is constantly evolving, with new innovations and advancements being made every day. One of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). AI has the potential to revolutionize industries and improve our daily lives in ways we never thought possible.
One of the most important uses of AI is in the field of healthcare. AI has the ability to analyze massive amounts of data and identify patterns that humans may not be able to see. This can be incredibly useful in diagnosing diseases, predicting patient outcomes, and developing personalized treatment plans.
For example, AI algorithms can analyze medical images such as X-rays and MRIs to detect abnormalities that may be missed by human radiologists. This can lead to earlier and more accurate diagnoses, ultimately saving lives. AI can also be used to predict which patients are at risk for developing certain conditions, allowing doctors to intervene before the disease progresses.
In addition to diagnostics, AI is also being used to improve patient care. Chatbots powered by AI can provide patients with information and support, helping them manage their health more effectively. AI can also be used to streamline administrative tasks, freeing up healthcare providers to spend more time with patients.
Another area where AI is making a big impact is in the field of transportation. Self-driving cars, powered by AI algorithms, are becoming more common on the roads. These cars have the potential to reduce accidents caused by human error and make transportation more efficient.
AI is also being used to optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve public transportation systems. By analyzing data from sensors and cameras, AI algorithms can predict traffic patterns and adjust traffic signals in real-time to keep traffic moving smoothly.
In the world of finance, AI is being used to detect fraud, predict market trends, and automate financial tasks. AI-powered chatbots are also being used to provide customer support and help users manage their finances more effectively.
Overall, the potential applications of AI are vast and varied. From healthcare to transportation to finance, AI has the power to transform industries and improve our daily lives. As the technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in the future.
