New York City Achieves Record Low in Murders and Shootings in 2025
New York City has reached a significant milestone in public safety, with the lowest number of murders and shootings recorded in modern history for the first five months of the year. Mayor Eric Adams made the announcement, revealing that there were 112 homicides from January to May, which is one less than the previous records set in 2014 and 2017.
In addition, there were 18 murders reported in May, marking a decrease from the previous low of 19 in May 2019. The city also saw a total of 264 shootings during the same period, three fewer than the 2018 figures. The month of May alone recorded 54 shootings, surpassing the previous low of 61 in 2019.
Mayor Adams, who is running for reelection this year as an independent candidate, expressed pride in the city’s achievements in reducing crime rates. He stated, “When I took the oath of office as mayor, I made a promise that we would make this city safer and drive down crime. Today, the numbers prove that we have not just kept that promise — we have exceeded it.”
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch also commended the efforts of the officers and the mayor in achieving this milestone. However, she took a swipe at the state’s recent criminal justice reforms, emphasizing that results like these require deliberate actions and strategies.
Tisch highlighted the NYPD’s relentless efforts in combating gun violence through targeted policing and gun control measures. She emphasized the importance of data-driven strategies that place officers in high-risk areas at critical times. Tisch assured the public that the NYPD will continue its proactive approach to maintaining public safety, with a Summer Violence Reduction Plan in place to sustain the city’s historic safety gains.
The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, city officials, and community members have contributed to the record low in murders and shootings in New York City. The commitment to public safety and the dedication of officers on the ground have played a crucial role in achieving these remarkable results. The city looks forward to building on this success and ensuring the continued safety and well-being of its residents.
