The city that never sleeps has just achieved a remarkable milestone – going 12 days without a single homicide. This achievement matches a historical record set nearly a decade ago, as confirmed by the NYPD on Monday.

The streak came to an end on Sunday night when a 38-year-old man was tragically shot in the head in the Bronx. Prior to this incident, New York City had not experienced such a prolonged period without a homicide since 2015 when the record for the longest stretch without a killing was established.

NYPD Police Commissioner, Jessica Tisch, commended the department’s efforts, stating, “Right strategy. Great execution. That’s how you set record after record.” She expressed gratitude to the dedicated members of the NYPD who have worked tirelessly to drive down violent crime to record lows.

In addition to the zero-homicide stretch, murder rates in the city have also seen a significant decline. Last month, there were only 16 reported slayings, marking the lowest level since 2018. The latest crime data further revealed that in November, Queens and Staten Island saw no murders at all.

Overall, murder rates plummeted by 46.6% last month compared to the same period in 2024, showcasing a substantial improvement in the city’s safety and security.

The NYPD’s relentless efforts and strategic initiatives have undoubtedly played a vital role in curbing crime and ensuring the well-being of New York City residents. This recent milestone serves as a testament to the department’s dedication and commitment to maintaining public safety in the Big Apple.
