An NYC detective was shot while serving a search warrant at a suspected drug house, sparking outrage after the convict claimed he mistook the officers for robbers and received a shortened sentence through a plea deal. Narcotics Det. Dominick Libretti was injured during the predawn raid in New Springville on Staten Island on January 20, 2022, when Nelson Pizarro, 41, fired shots at the officers.

Pizarro, who was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, assault on a police officer, and criminal possession of a weapon, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder and accepted a 16-year prison sentence. This decision has left Detective Libretti feeling dissatisfied, as he believes the sentence does not reflect the severity of the incident where he almost lost his life.

The union officials revealed that Pizarro could have faced a minimum of 40 years in jail for attempting to kill the five police officers during the raid. Libretti emphasized that the police team had clearly identified themselves by repeatedly announcing their presence before entering the location with a search warrant.

According to Libretti, Pizarro locked himself in a bedroom and started shooting as soon as he saw the officers, hitting Libretti in the chest and shoulder. In the exchange of gunfire, Libretti was also wounded in the leg. Despite the dangerous situation, the officers followed protocol and continued to announce their presence even after the door was breached, ensuring that Pizarro was aware they were law enforcement.

The plea deal and reduced sentence have left Detective Libretti and his colleagues feeling frustrated and disappointed. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the challenges they encounter while carrying out their responsibilities to protect the community.
